DON'T WRITE IT THE WAY YOU RECEIVED IT!
I saw that photo on The Song Sphere's instagram page and immediately reposted on our instagram page. I couldn't agree with them more. Please follow us on instagram @spintamgt.
I recently had the honour to speak on how to succeed as a gospel artiste in today's music industry at a training organised by Tenstrings music institute and one of the things I told them was "You can only
write about the God you know".
The quality of the songs you write is directly proportional to the product of the quality of scriptures rooted in your spirit and the level of your relationship with God.
I recently had a conversation with a gospel artiste in Lagos, Nigeria. He's quite successful. Here it goes:
*Plays songs from album he's about to release.*
ME: I like the melody of this song, I think it's going to be a hit but you need to rewrite the lyrics.
HE: Ah, why? I write my songs the way God gives them to me, I don't change anything.
ME: Haba! God will give you the idea but you have to interpret it creatively na. Okay don't worry, I'll rewrite it for you.
HE: Does that mean I'll have to re-voice it?
ME: Yes.
HE: Ah, it won't work o. I've already sent it for mixing and mastering.
ME: Doesn't it bother you that your lyrics don't even attempt to rhyme? Shouldn't you be more concerned by the quality of the songs you put out than just releasing an album at all costs?
HE: Ah. Don't worry. I'll release it like that.
The above conversation isn't an unusual one in this space. Gospel artistes need to learn the skill of song writing or at least employ the services of a songwriter to assist them to write songs. Israel Houghton and Aaron Lindsey have had an amazing song writing relationship for years and they've spurned out powerful songs as a result.
Are you having difficulty writing your songs as a gospel artiste? Study the scriptures more, have a working relationship with the Holy Spirit, know God better and/or employ the services of a skilled song writer.

Best wishes!
