RECIPE FOR SUCCESS (THAT SPECIAL MEAL)

Above is a photo of a classic Southern Nigerian dish, Afang soup, which happens to be one of my mother's signature dishes, which also happens to be my signature dish. Buzz me in the comment section for recipes ;)

An average African, Nigerian especially, can relate to the scenarios I'm about to paint.

Remember that time you
just came back from school after getting your WAEC results and you passed all your subjects with a minimum of a C6? Or that time you just came back from the café after printing your JAMB results and you got 250points which meant you could study medicine and surgery and hopefully make history and become the first medical doctor in your family?

Okay, let's assume you weren't such a bright child; Remember that time you got your admission letter into a tertiary institution? Or that time you just came back home from NYSC in your uniform?

Now, remember how mama was so happy and proud of you she killed THAT chicken and cooked the most amazing meal you'd ever tasted and how you got THE "LAP(s)"?

Okay, remember when you were expecting that big visitor at home, probably your uncle or your father's childhood friend? Remember how mama took special care to wash the kponmo and pick the best of every ingredient used in preparing that special soup; her signature dish. (Oh, that BIG dried fish  you cleaned but couldn't have a taste of because it wasn't enough for the soup *rolls eyes*).

Remember how you watched mama cook that soup with so much passion and you knew without a doubt that it was going taste great. It really had no choice but to taste great, and it always did taste great.

The only reason we look forward to eating our mother's food besides the great taste is mostly because deep down we know it's prepared with passion.

Passion is synonymous with Love.

You must love what you do to succeed at it.

If you want us to look forward to listening to your music, you must create it with the same kind of passion with which your mama cooked THAT special meal. Remember, music is just like cooking. Just like mama carefully picked her ingredients for her signature soup, you must carefully select the components of your music. Passion is what you need to make your music, so before you release a song today, ask yourself is this THAT SPECIAL SONG?

You need passion to succeed in the industry. Nobody will help you if they don't see the passion in you. You must eat, breathe, sweat music. If you're not passionate enough to take your guitar with you in the rain and go for that gig that's going to define your career, then you're not ready to succeed. If you're not passionate enough to sit for 5 hours, starving  and smelling the aroma of the food you can hear others eat in the room down the hall while you wait to see "oga" (He knows himself. LOL), hoping you just might get a record deal from him, you're not ready to succeed.
So, yeah, after believing in yourself, you need passion to succeed.

Please feel free to share your thoughts on this in the comment section below.
