HOW TO KICK-START YOUR MUSIC CAREER

So, you've decided that you are made for this, being a musician is your purpose, you can only find fulfilment doing music... Well, congratulations, you've taken your first step. Problem is, this is the easiest step, it's a mental baby step. You can take it sleeping in your bed all day. You can take it while watching a movie. You can take it while you're still at that white collar job you hate so much. So, you see, as much as it is a good step, it is worthless without the next step which in my books is the First step of first steps.

ACTION STEP

A lot of people are scared of this step but it is the most important and necessary step you must take to kick-start your music career. I'm going to explain as practically as possible things you could do to kick-start your music career;

- Get closer to God more than you ever have. Spend more time on the word. Ask him to direct you on what to do and be sure to listen back. Once you get an instruction, act on it. It could fall among some of the suggestions I'll be giving hereafter.

- Tell someone whom you're sure has your best interest at heart and will support you no matter what. You're going to need them. It could be a friend, family, spouse, lover, etc.

- Volunteer in a choir. Be very careful of the church you volunteer at. It must be a church that appreciates and understands good music otherwise you won't grow. It's the honest truth. If you have an unconventional style, it is best you join your youth church and participate in youth activities. You're more likely to be given opportunities to express your talent in a youth church given your style of music.

- Build relationships with the musicians (Instrumentalists) in your choir. They are the ones who go out the most. They know all the producers and studios in town. You can even be following them to shows. Avoid choir members who have no interest in building a music career, they'll just waste your time. Look for like minds and purpose driven people to associate with. I'll write more on relationships in a future post.

- Attend every event in town you can think of. Just attend. You may not meet anybody but watching other musicians perform will fuel the fire in you. It's important that fire keeps burning.

- Learn an instrument. If you are buoyant, attend a music school for at least one year. Train your voice. Develop yourself.

- Listen to loads and loads of music. Not all secular music are vulgar. There are loads of love songs and inspirational songs out there. Keep listening.

- Follow industry executives on social media. Follow spintamgt on social media and keep reading our blog for guidance.

- If your job doesn't give you enough time to do any of these, quit. You read it, QUIT YOUR JOB. That is one major step you'll need to take. It's going to be tough but if you're persistent, consistent, dedicated, resilient and patient, it'll will pay off.

You're going to deal with a lot of self-doubt but you have to shake it off and hold on to your belief. Build confidence and kick-start your career. People will laugh at you initially, people will criticize you. People will offer you jobs. People will discourage you. You'll constantly see failed musicians but you'll also see successful musicians. You have to focus on the latter.

If you ask me how I started my own career, I had a gut instinct and acted on it. At the time I didn't know it was God speaking to me but it was too strong to ignore. Something told me, go to Cobhams Asuquo. I didn't know him or anyone who knew him. Well, I took the first step by telling a friend of mine who happens to be a saxophonist. My plan was to record a demo and take to Cobhams and I wanted the friend to suggest a studio I could record the demo at; that was when he told me he knew someone who knew Cobhams and that was it. I'm going to share my story on the blog someday. Just stay tuned. 😉

What I'm basically trying to say is, walk with God and it'll be easier for you. That's my testimony.

Take that first step  and kick-start your music career today.
